Between fertile land and conflict
The Cauca possesses an innumerable cultural and natural wealth, reason why this territory has been disputed by all the armed groups in the country. This department has an extension of forests of 53% and agricultural zones of 43%, considered of high and medium fertility, which implies the development of private economic projects, industries, mining, hydroelectric projects and agroforestry exploitation through monocultures.
Currently, the department of Cauca is located within the most unequal departments of the country, the last census carried out in 2017 by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE). It indicates that 62.3 per cent of the ethnic population and 44.5 per cent of the non-ethnic population are living in poverty.
